El Castillo

El Castillo is a historic town located in Rio San Juan, Nicaragua. The most popular sight in town is the 17th century Fortress of Immaculate Conception, or El Morro, a strategically built fortress originally built by the Spanish to defend against invading pirates. The locals thrive mainly from fishing and farming, and the town feels as if one has stepped back into history, with no cars or modern paved roads. The peaceful town is surrounded by rainforest and breathtaking panoramic views with unique flora and fauna. El Castillo serves as a convenient base for exploring the nearby Indio Maiz Biological Reserve.
